Oftentimes when something is offered at no charge or even discounted, it is not considered of any value … by the giver or receiver.

I hope that will not apply today and that you will find this offer of value. The intent is to help anyone who is unemployed or underemployed to be able to take advantage of the resources to help you find work and hold on to hope through the journey.

Therefore, beginning tomorrow, June 16th through the 19th, you will find the Accidental Sabbatical ebook FREE On Amazon here.

I pray that the combination of practical advice, hopeful quotes and verses blesses you.

Oh, and if you do not have a Kindle, click on the “Read on Any Device” link on the left side and you can read it on your PC, iPad, or other electronic options.

The longer unemployment goes on, the less disposal income there is in the budget. Especially for books, my personal guilty pleasure.

Therefore, as of now the price for my ebook Accidental Sabbatical is now 99 cents. If you have already purchased the paperback, you can pick up the Kindle version free.

You will find it here on Amazon.

Several people I know have given up searching for a job.

Have you?

If you are still looking for ideas, and most of all hope in the journey, I believe you will find it there.

5-minute Friends

Networking can be one of the most difficult parts of job hunting. Or of life, for that matter. Sometimes you can meet someone who will actually become a colleague or a true friend. Other times, and more often than not, you meet someone who becomes a 5-minute friend.

This is especially true in a transient environment – people move into an area, they have no family close, and you meet. This can be at a social club, a church, a job-seeker group or other professional networking event. You exchange business cards or email addresses and go on your way.

The woman who introduced herself as a financial planner quickly emails, asking if you have time to meet for coffee; saying she’d love to see how you can help each other in business.

In reality, she sells life insurance and has a hard sales pitch. You drink the hot coffee and escape as quickly as possible. And you never hear from her again.

Then there is the other one who sells some sort of food program for dieting – similar to Nutrisystem but a different name that I can’t remember. I don’t remember her name either.

And of course we can’t forget the men and women who have been writing a book for years, and want to ‘pick your brain’ about how to get it edited and published, but don’t want to pay anything – just want your expertise pro bono.

So how do I avoid becoming a 5-minute friend?

I ask questions about your life, your work, your business, and I listen when you answer.

I don’t just sit there preparing my own speech.

I listen for common ground and join in that discussion.

I don’t try to sell you anything.

I listen to what you do and think of ways I can help you in your business or career.

I don’t ask you to give your time and expertise for free.

To become more than a 5-minute friend, I have to invest something of myself in you. My time, my energy, my goodwill. Something. As Stephen Covey said years ago, a relationship is like a bank account. There are deposits and withdrawals, and they can be bankrupted.

So who has only received a 5-minute deposit from you lately?

Do you have more to give? Do it.

It’s Not About the Job

Taking a job for the cash is not as important as taking a job for the joy.

~ Simon Sinek

In the beginning of my Accidental Sabbatical, I really thought it was about finding a job, the job, replacing the paycheck, reactivating the 401K.

Being ‘normal’ again.

But as this journey has changed me, and the definition of ‘normal’ has changed, I have come to the conclusion that ‘the job’ is simply an ongoing project. Finding a way to be useful and find joy in whatever it is I am doing, has become the ongoing project in life.

A project is basically defined as an endeavor that has a beginning, middle and an end, designed to achieve a particular goal.

This is the season of award shows, and as artists give their acceptance speeches, many of them inevitably talk about how lucky they are to get to wake up every day and do what they love. What they are really saying is that they are lucky to be able to earn money doing what they love to do.

So if we have work that earns money doing something that isn’t necessarily a first love, how do we have joy in that?

We choose joy.

I know, Kay Warren already wrote an excellent book on the subject; living it is the key.

For me that means focusing on the parts that give me joy in every project. I have multiple projects happening right now, and there are parts of each of them that give me great joy. Most importantly, I know that the Lord has given me each opportunity and when I feel that He has ‘placed me’, I intentionally look for the reason why
not only what my goals are but what His might be.

One goal is always in alignment, and that is for me to become more like Christ, for my faith to grow, for me to understand that the Almighty God loves me and is the source of all. It doesn’t matter what skills I have or that I get to use on any particular project. He provides.

He always provides enough financial resources, challenge, and joy.

Have you already found joy or a job or both?

Five Minute Friday: DARE

24 Friday Oct 2014

Speaking to myself:

I dare you to trust in Him.

I dare you to be bold and walk into the fear.

I dare you to look above the negative and see only positive.

I typically don’t make decisions based on emotion, and I believe daring someone to do something is just that. But that isn’t necessarily negative.

Courage is an emotion.

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, the verb dare means:

‘:to have enough courage or confidence to do something: to not be too afraid

:to do something that is difficult or that people are usually afraid to do.

:to tell someone to do something especially as a way of showing courage.’

So again I say to myself: have courage, even if it is difficult and you’re afraid. I dare you.

What will you dare yourself to do today?
